With the tagline ’99 slaps and 1 kiss’, ‘Ugly Aur Pagli’ was amongst the most awaited movies of 2008. After the release, we can say that the slaps got boring by the time they reached the count of even 9 and the kiss was way too far away! Almost a copy of, or shall we say inspired by, the South Korean film ‘My Sassy Girl’, ‘Ugly Aur Pagli’ failed to raise much laughs. It quashed the hope that we had from it, especially after watching Pritish Nandy Communication’s last hit movie ‘Pyar Ke Side Effects’, which seemed as its precursor.
One of the problems with the movie is that the characters are too difficult too digest. While Mallika comes across as way too irritating and obnoxious, it is very difficult to accept a guy that is soooo sissy. I mean, what happened to a guy’s so called self-respect, leave alone the ego part. The only scenes where you find yourself smiling owe credit to Ranvir. Though the film was shorter than the usual Bollywood flicks, it seemed to drag on endlessly. The only reason why ‘Ugly Aur Pagli’ worked, to whatever extent, was because of the actors.
As far as performance go, Ranvir Shorey has done an excellent job. After proving his mettle in films like ‘Khosla Ka Ghosla’ and ‘Mithya’, he again managed to win our hearts. Talking about Mallika Sherawat, she is not too bad either. In fact, she actually comes across as a good performer, till the time she does not try to do the emotional stuff. While Bharti Achrekar, remember ‘Wagle ki Duniya’ manages to make her presence felt, Sushmita Mukherjee defintiley brings in the necessary laughs. All in all, it is better to avoid the movie.

The makers of Rahul Bose-Mallika Sherawat starrer ‘Pyar Ke Side Effects’ are coming soon to tickle your funny bones once again. Rangita Pritish Nandy and Pritish Nandy have come up with another comedy flick, named ‘Ugly and Pagli’, which has been directed by Sachin Kamlakar Khot. It will be released on 25th July 2008, under the banner of Pritish Nandy Communications Ltd. The music for the film has been given by Anu Malik, while Amitabh Varma is the lyricist. The star cast includes Mallika Sherawat, Ranvir Shorey, Manish Anand, Tinu Anand, Sushmita Mukherjee, Vihang Nayak, Bharti Achrekar and Sapna Bhavnani. ‘Ugly Aur Pagli’ is the love story, sort of, of Kabir a.k.a. Ugly (Ranvir) and Kuhu a.k.a. Pagli (Mallika). Ugly is a very normal, though a bit boring, guy who has been studying engineering for the last ten years. Though his life is extremely boring, he is quite happy with it. There is just one thing that he always pines for, a loving girlfriend. One cold winter night, at Victoria Terminus Station (Mumbai), he meets Pagli and since that time, his life is never the same. Pagli takes him on a whirlwind tour of the world, which turns his life totally upside down.
She is a totally obnoxious girl, who is full of wit, is very strong-headed and has never ever known the meaning of ‘being in control’. She has the ability to captivate you with her charm and then, leave you in a state of total chaos and confusion. Behind this wild outer personality is an emotional girl who is going through a personal crisis. However, the problem with Pagli is that the only way she knows to deal with her crisis is to have someone else also go through the same pain and hurt. Ugly gets trapped by her charm and becomes the victim of her revenge on the other human species. He perfectly fits her picture of a guy, whom she wants to make fall madly in love with her and then, totally wreck his life. As the nerdy Ugly tries to escape from the clutches of Pagli, he finds himself falling more in love with her.
