The Vista solution

The Vista solution provides a systematic approach to using precomputed aggregates to improve query performance. The key to this approach is that users always query the same set of detail tables. When these tables are updated, their associated aggregate tables are automatically maintained. When a query is executed, a cost-based analysis determines whether the query can be intercepted and rewritten against an aggregate table to improve its performance. In addition, statistics about query execution are logged so that administrators can find out how efficiently the existing aggregation strategy is working, as well as how to improve that strategy. Vista operates in the context of both versioned and nonversioned databases.

Vista consists of three components:

A query rewrite system that intercepts and rewrites queries to use aggregate tables. This process is completely transparent to the query whether issued by a user or an application. A maintenance feature that propagates changes to precomputed aggregate data when the detail data changes. A query-logging and analysis facility that can be queried for advice on the size and relative benefits of both existing aggregate tables and new tables that would be useful to create.

What is new about Vista compare to XP?

Previously Microsoft delivered five different versions of the Windows XP operating system, but these different versions were designed for specific types of PC hardware and not for the different ways people use their PCs.

For example, keeping in the mind mobile PC users Windows XP Professional Tablet PC Edition is designed which supports handwriting recognition. For multimedia lovers Microsoft designed Windows XP Media Center Edition for getting home entertainment. Again for graphic designers and speed lovers, a cutting-edge 64-bit processor is used in Windows XP Professional x64 Edition.

But what if one is looking for a single operating system that can connect to your TV, run on a mobile PC that supports handwriting recognition and also serve as the hub of your home entertainment system, and for professional who wants a 64-bit performance and security? Microsoft exactly find out these limitations on Windows XP and dramatically improve the computing experience of all types of PC user while designing Windows Vista and will offer more flexible operating system.
