Mobile Numbers going to Change as 11 Digit in India

Get ready to change your mobile number

In 2003 Indian Telecom department had planned for 10 digit mobile numbering that would last for 30 years, but given the meteoric rise in the number of mobile subscribers, the quota seems to be over within 5 years. The growth in mobile subscribers has been nearly 100% year on year reaching 250 million by the end of last month.

The tele-density in the country is more than 25 per cent now, with the average monthly mobile growth at over 8 million. The government has set a target of 500 million phone subscribers by the year 2010.

To accommodate this growth, the DoT plans to introduce an additional prefix of 9 to every mobile number taking it to 11 digits. So, `99’ will be the first two digits in every mobile number, in the 11-digit regime.

TEC (Telecom Engineering Centre) has recommended a timeframe of six to nine months, for converting the existing 10-digit mobile numbers to the 11-digit format. The shift to 11-digit number will apply to all mobile users-GSM (global systems for mobile communications) and CDMA (code division multiple access), old and new subscribers.

Nine mobile operators were recently given over 120 telecom licenses to offer services across many circles. Currently, the established players offering mobile phone services include Bharti, Reliance Communications, Vodafone Essar, Idea Cellular, Tata Teleservices, Aircel-Maxis, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL), Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) and Spice.

The new telecom operators will be allotted the spare levels of 90 and 91 in the 10-digit series. But, they too will have to migrate to 11 digits, by prefixing '9', in the same timeframe as the existing telecom companies

However, the fixed line phone numbers would continue to remain as is it is. While all GSM and CDMA subscribers whether old or new, would now have 11 digit numbers.

All the new telephone operators like Unitech, Shyam Telelink, Videocon among others would be alloted series of number starting with 90 and 91.

Apart from India, China and UK follow 11-digit numbers, while USA has a more integrated pattern of common numbering plan with similar numbers for mobile as well as landline numbers, much like Tata ‘Walky’ and Reliance ‘Hello’. via

The debate is still going on between the government and the regulators. But, industry sources say that India can add another 250 million mobile subscribers without having to move to the 11-digit format that is possible till 2010.

Pope voices his opposition to gay unions

Pope voices his opposition to gay unions

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Benedict XVI is pressing his opposition to gay unions. He says traditional marriage is an irreplaceable good for the entire society, and calls the union between man and woman the "natural cradle" of life.

He told representatives of Catholic family organizations in Europe on Friday that traditional marriage should not be confused with other forms of union.

Several European countries have approved same-sex unions, and California's Supreme Court on Thursday said gay couples there can marry. Massachusetts is the only U.S. state to legalize gay marriage.

Pope Benedict today restated the Catholic Church's position that only unions between a man and a woman are moral.

The pontiff was speaking a day after a California court ruled in favour of same-sex marriage, although he made no mention of the that decision in his speech to family groups from throughout Europe.

But he stressed the Church's position several times.

"The union of love, based on matrimony between a man and a woman, which makes up the family, represents a good for all society that can not be substituted by, confused with, or compared to other types of unions," he said.

The Pope also spoke of the inalienable rights of the traditional family, "founded on matrimony between a man and a woman, to be the natural cradle of human life".

On Thursday, the California Supreme Court overturned a ban on same-sex marriages in a major victory for gay rights advocates that will allow homosexual couples to marry in the most populous US state.

The court found laws limiting marriage to heterosexual couples are at odds with rights guaranteed by the state's constitution.

President George W. Bush, who is opposed to gay marriage, prayed "for the family" with the Pope at the White House last month during the pontiff's visit there.

Last year, the Catholic Church successfully campaigned against an Italian law proposed by the previous centre-left government that would have given more rights to gay and unmarried couples.

The Catholic Church teaches that homosexuality is not sinful but homosexual acts are, and it is opposed to gays being allowed to adopt children.
