History and Record of Ronaldo

History of Ronaldo

Name: Ronaldo Luis Nazario de Lima

Date of Birth: 22.09.1976 (Bento Ribeiro)

Height: 1.83m

Position: Striker

Nationality: Brazilian

Caps: 91 (58 goals)

PSV paid a then record fee of £4 million for the prodigiously talented teenager who was an unused member of Brazil's 1994 World Cup winning squad.

After averaging a goal a game in the Dutch league Barcelona won a fierce battle with Inter over Ronaldo's signature. An amazing start to his Spanish career saw him collect the first of his FIFA and World Soccer player awards. He finished La Liga top scorer, scored the winning goal for Barcelona in the Cup Winners Cup final and also scored in the Copa America final for
Brazil.

One year after missing out on his signature, Inter snatched him away from Barca by paying the £19 million buy out clause in his contract, £9 million more than Barca had paid for him the previous season. His relentless goalscoring rate continued earning him second successive FIFA and World Soccer player of the year awards and for the first time the most prestigious award of them all, the Ballon D'or.

Ronaldo completed an unwanted hat-trick of second place finishes following a hugely controversial defeat against Juventus. While Inter were fuming over the referee's failure to award them a penalty for a foul on Ronaldo Juventus promptly wentdownfield and won one their own with a trademark dive. Del Piero converted and Juventus went on to seal the championship. Ronaldo helped Inter gain consolation weeks later with a goal in a 3-0 UEFA Cup final victory over Lazio.

Clearly established as the best player in the World Ronaldo lived up to the hype at the 1998 World Cup. He was outstanding as both goalscorer and goal maker as Brazil marched relentlessly towards a record fifth World Cup with victories over Denmarkand Holland in classic encounters. Ronaldo's name didn't appear on Brazil's initial team sheet for the final against France. Rumours that the striker had suffered a convulsive fit on the eve of the finals were later confirmed. A lethargic Ronaldowatched on helplessly as hosts France thrashed them to win their first ever World Cup.

Ronaldo ended a frustrating, injury plagued 1998-1999 campaign on a high note by helping Brazil retain the Copa America. He ruptured a tendon in his right knee in November and lasted six minutes into his comeback in an Italian Cup tie againstLazio. Lazio proved to be the striker's bogey club. After missing almost two years with injury Ronaldo returned to action in
2002. Inter needed victory away to Lazio to win the championship. They were crushed 4-2 and Ronaldo left the pitch in tears after being substituted late in the second half.

Ronaldo would cry tears of joy in the World Cup that summer. Champions France and arch rivals Argentina fell in the first round and Brazil took full advantage of a weak field to win a fifth World Cup, Ronaldo scored both goals in the final against Germany.

An unhappy five year stay in Italy ended with a move to Real Madrid. An overweight Ronaldo was pillared by the Spanish press following indifferent form but finally came good in the second half of the season as Real made up for a champions league exit at the hands of Juventus to win the Spanish championship, his first ever league title.

Knee injuries have robbed 'Il Fenomeno' of his astonishing pace but he still remains one of the deadliest strikers in the game. Despite poor performances in the 2006 World Cup he managed to break Gerd Muller's record as all time leading scorerin the competition with 15 goals and has already established himself as one of the all time greats.

History and Record of Ronaldino

History of Ronaldino

Name : Ronaldo de Assis Moreira

Nicknames : Ronaldinho Gaucho, The One Man Show, Dinho, Ronnie

Nationality : Brazilian

Date of Birth : March 21, 1980 - Porto Alegre, Brazil

Playing Position : Attacking Midfielder / Forward

Current Club : Barcelona (Spanish La Liga)

Intern. Career : 1999-present Brazil

About Ronaldinho: Born into a footballing family (his late father Joao played for Cruzeiro and his brother, now his manager, Roberto played for Gremio), the young Ronaldinho found more enjoyment in futsal and beach football before graduating to playing the standard game.

He began his football career at his brother's old club Gremio in the youth team under future Brazil World Cup winning coach Luiz Felipe Scolari and progressed to the first team aged 18 in 1998 and had made his Brazilian national team debut a year later in 1999.

His goalscoring exploits and sublime skill on the ball drew much attention from Europe and in 2001 Ronaldinho left Gremio to move to France and Paris St. Germain. His time in Paris was littered with fallings out with then PSG coach Luis Fernandez who disapproved of Ronaldinho's love of Parisian nightlife and after two mildly successful years in France he again packed his bags and headed for Barcelona.

In his first season at Barcelona Ronaldinho more than justified his reputed £18m price tag as he helped coax the Catalan giants into second place in La Liga and earnt himself the title of 2004 World Player of the Year.

Having caught the eye of big spending Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, Ronaldinho was the subject of a failed £60m bid from the West London club and despite the resignation of his friend Sandor Rosell as Barcelona's vice president of sports, he signed a new contract in late 2005 with the Catalan club.

As well as helping Barcelona to back to back La Liga titles in 2004/2005 and 2005/2006 and the European Champion's League in 2006, Ronaldinho has also won a host of personal awards including:

FIFA World Player of the Year in 2004 and 2005

FIFPro World Player of the Year in 2005 and 2006

European Footballer of the Year in 2005

UEFA Champions League Best Forward in 2004-05

World Soccer Player of the Year in 2004 and 2005 and UEFA Champions League Most Valuable Player in 2005-06.

Ronaldinho also became a World Cup winner with Brazil in 2002.

History of Sachin Tendulkar

By popular vote, the greatest batsman in the world today, Sachin Tendulkar has the cricketing world at his feet. The adulation he commands world over is unsurpassed, perhaps since the days of Don Bradman, to whom of course he has been compared, by no less than the great man himself. While he may not end with a Test career average of 99.94, there is little doubt that based on his vigorous style of batsmanship and his insatiable appetite for runs and big scores, he is the most complete batsman since Vivian Richards. In many ways though he has surpassed even that outstanding West Indian batsman.

When Tendulkar is on song, there is no more majestic sight in the cricketing world. The spectators at the stadium are on their feet cheering while all over the world, TV audiences are glued to the screen. He has scored heavily on all kinds of wickets the world over, in conditions which lesser mortals have not been able to master and against bowlers whom other batsmen have found it difficult to score off. Immensely gifted and blessed with an impeccable technique, Tendulkar's batting is a dream, combining timing, elegance and power. Mentally very strong, Tendulkar is best when confronted by a challenge - as he showed when mowing down Shane Warne in India in 1998. Captain during two short stints, Tendulkar has made it clear that he would prefer to concentrate on his batting and indeed, he seems to be getting better with every passing year. Scoring two double centuries in successive seasons and being the first to cross the 10,000 run barrier in ODIs is clear proof of this. The best thing from the fans' point of view - if not the bowler's - is that the entertainment, courtesy Tendulkar, is still at the intermission stage. Long may `The King' continue to regale his willing subjects!

Sachin Tendulkar became the first player to reach 15,000 runs in one-day internationals while steering India to a six-wicket win over South Africa in the Future Cup in Belfast on Friday.
